Joy Hecht

Joy Hecht is an environmental economist from New York City who holds a PhD in urban planning, travels the world for her work, and lives in St. John's, Newfoundland. When she lets her right brain take over, she has experimented with graphic design, quilting, mosaic, ink drawing, and watercolor. Most recently she is using her artistic side to express her strong sense of place, depicting the cities where she travels and lives, and sharing her work through the Urban Sketchers community. Three years ago she shifted to working in paper, scissors, and glue, and realized that in collage she had found a medium that lets her express her perceptions of place in a way she finds both satisfying and visually effective. Joy's greatest inspiration in this work (as well as her earliest interest in world travel) comes from her very youthful exposure to Miroslav Sasek's This is New York, This is London, and This is Paris, all of which she still has in first editions complete with the now-immortal scribbles of her five-year-old self. She has one collage in the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Art Bank, and has shown her collages through the artist program of Jumping Bean Coffee on Elizabeth Avenue.
